Salacia Oblonga is a perennial woody climbing vine native to India and SriLanka. It is a member of the Celastaceae family . It has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine for the oral treatment of diabetes
S.oblonga is a woody, climbing vine that grows wild in India and Sri Lanka. Ayurvedic ancient texts of the Indian traditional health care system, describe the use of Salacia plant to maintain blood sugar. Traditionally, Salacia is ingested as an herbal tea, in which, a tea bag of the herbal mixture is steeped in boiling water and ingested using a formula passed on in an oral tradition to members of the family of the Ayurvedic practitioners.
The roots of S.oblonga have been extensively used as a specific remedy for the initial stages of diabetes mellitus in the Ayurvedic system. It has also been used extensively as a dietary supplement.
In recent years, the use of S.oblonga extract as a dietary supplement has gained popularity in Western countries, including the United States and Japan
